Varkala is a town in Thiruvananthapuram district of the Indian state of Kerala. Paravoor, Attingal and Kollam are some of the nearby cities from here. Malayalam is the local language spoken here. It is located 43 KM towards from the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram. The city lies in the border of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. It is the only place in Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea.

History and Culture of Varkala

Varkala is known for the ancient Janardana Swani Temple. There are also different myths that go behind the name of the city. It is said that a Pandyan King was instructed by Lord Brahma to build a temple here to get rid of his sins. As per another myth, when a group of pilgrims approached Lord Narada to tell him that they had sinned, Lord Narada threw his Valkalam that landed at this scenic place, giving the city its current name.
